The mystery and intrigue was well done. Teenage Jan was enjoying a happy and innocent life in Indonesia when she and her family found themselves in the path of the invading Japanese. This book demolishes Native American stereotypes and delivers its characters as fully realized human beings. I think it is a must-read.
